The kos-minar was built by Mughal emperor Akbar in A.D. 1575 for administrative convenience and also for the comfort of travellers. Such tapering minars were built to mark a distance of every kos (3.20 km). The minar stands on a masonry platform and is built of lime-plastered lakhauri bricks with an octagonal section below and a larger circular section above. A well was invariably built near such a minar often with a sarai.
